Hay costs per bale
Hay costs per bale
We don't sell hay buy the bale and here is why...
Buy it smart, buy it right:
People call us everyday asking "how much is your hay per bale?"
The first thing I tell them is nobody should purchase hay by the bale. No matter what the "per bale" price is,
everybody is really buying hay by the pound.
They usually reply with something like "Well, I used to get my hay down the road from a guy that sells 50 to 60 pound bales for $3.50 per bale, but they don't seem to eat all of it".
60 pounds, really?:
I drove all around Western Washington this summer and bought a some of those $3.50 hay bales from everybody that I could find. The sellers all told me they were in the 50 to 65 pound range but the heaviest one I purchased weighed in at only 32 pounds (I have a hay scale). Plus every bale had at least one type of weed, there was daisey, clover, thistles, berry briars, chickweed etc. One "grower" even had Tansy Ragwort inside one of those $3.50 bales! They ranged between 0% moisture content to a high of 5.4%, in otherwords... Dry as a bone!
Price per pound:
So let's do the math, say you get suckered in for that 32 pound bale at $3.50. The per pound price equals 10.9 cents per pound (don't forget that your are also buying a bunch of weeds) The true per ton prices is $218.00!
Waste:
Because your critters are not going to eat any of weeds or grass that's dryer than a box of Post Toasties, we need to factor in waste. My research indicates horses will only eat 65% of most three dollar hay, they would rather stand on it than eat it. So you will need to feed more which means you must buy more. This raises the real hard-dollar out of your pocket cost to a grand total of $294.00 per ton. Just like everything else in life, you get what you pay for.
Our hay which is completely free of any weeds is a lot less money than the "guy down the street's three dollar hay. And your horses will love it!
Bottom line, spend the money for good hay even if you don't buy it from us, always ask for the price per ton. Doing so will save you money in the long run.
Bale weight tip:
Most folks don't have a hay scale handy so here is a quick way to verify what that bale really weighs. A 60 pound bale of hay should be very difficult for the average person to lift. (I move hay every day and it ain't easy) If you can lift it off the ground with one hand, with both strings in the same hand, the bale's true weight is approximately 35 pounds or less. If you can not pull both strings together and lift with one hand the bale is over 60 pounds.
